Work by CAAD students included in Sikka 2018
Work produced by students from the AUS visual communication and multimedia design programs will be featured in the exhibition Out of the Dark as part of Dubai's Sikka Art Fair 2018. Tashkeel—a Dubai-based initiative that nurtures contemporary art and design practice rooted in the UAE—organized and curated this exhibition, which focuses on analog photography. The work will be on display in Tashkeel House in the Al Fahidi area of Dubai during the fair, which will be held March 17-26.
The work was created in the course Analog Photography taught by Professor Mark Pilkington of the Department of Art and Design. The students’ work evolved from a class project that introduced and explored working with pinhole cameras. Exhibiting students are Sarah Alhulaibah, Sandrine Bassily, Eiman Alkhalifa, Hala Kanan, Yusra Zayour, Arwa Al Mahallawi, Mariam Alzayani, Deema Al Therman and Noor Eid.
Professor Pilkington, who teaches both practical and theory courses in photography at the AUS College of Architecture, Art and Design, observes: “These students have fully embraced working with analog photography. Their first project required them to make pinhole cameras and use them to make paper negatives and then positive prints. This is a process that dates back to photography’s origins in the mid-1800s. They have produced well-crafted and compelling work that goes beyond technical competence. I am delighted that their work has been recognized and selected for exhibition.”
