Active Learning Spaces
Faculty have access to four Active Learning Spaces in the LAN building. They are equipped with mobile changing stations, portable whiteboards, LCD screens, and rolling node chairs and rolling tables to increase comfort and to facilitate mobility and interaction among students and teachers. A number of Department of English classes are held in the Active Learning Spaces, helping faculty to move their course design beyond the lecture. The room design, flexible furniture, writing surfaces and technology all combine to support students and faculty in collaborative/interactive learning activities and more participatory use of media. Faculty also use them to facilitate flipped learning in combination with computer/writing labs.
AUS Writing Center
The department is also proud to run the Writing Center, which supports students’ writing across the AUS curriculum. The center provides one-on-one peer tutoring as well as other resources that help students improve their writing skills. The Writing Center also has a Writing Fellows program, where undergraduate and graduate students are trained as peer consultants and are assigned to a specific course for the entire semester. In addition, each semester, the Writing Center issues its own publication, Inkblot, which features creative writing, student research, writing tips and more.
Students, regardless of major, can become a part of the Writing Center, either as Writing Fellows or Tutors. For more information on the Writing Center or on how to become a tutor or fellow, please contact Dr. Maria Eleftheriou at [email protected].
