AUS mathematics conference brings together students and scholars from across the region
Students and faculty from across the region explored ideas related to the different branches of mathematics during the Second AUS Regional Student Conference on Mathematics held yesterday, March 4, 2017 at American University of Sharjah (AUS).
Organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Arts and Sciences, the conference brought together undergraduate and graduate students from the UAE and neighboring countries to discuss recent developments in mathematical research and education.
"Mathematics is an indispensable science that underpins research, technology and innovation," said Dr. Hana Sulieman, Head of the AUS Department of Mathematics and Statistics. "There is no better time than now to consider a career in mathematics and mathematical research as the world is becoming more technology-driven. A recent article published in Edarabia revealed that 40 percent of job roles will be lost to automation in just 25 years and six of the top 10 skills most sought-after among employers in UAE and the region included statistics, mathematics and computer science. We are committed to helping our students be well prepared for innovation-led tomorrow."
Contributed talks by students and keynote lectures covered topics such as algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, differential equations, discrete mathematics, financial mathematics, mathematics education, number theory, numerical analysis, probability theory, statistics and its applications, topology and geometry.
"Through stimulating keynote lectures and many interesting contributed presentations, this conference provides students with an opportunity to discover more of mathematics and its important applications that are not covered in the classroom," Dr. Sulieman said.
The conference also included student poster presentations, and participants were invited to submit extended abstracts or short papers to be published in the conference proceedings.
The first AUS Regional Student Conference on Mathematics was held in 2014. The conference contributes to the university's efforts of promoting mathematics in UAE in particular, and the region in general.
