AUS professor receives ASCE Region 10 Distinguished Service Medal
Dr. Mohammad AlHamaydeh, Professor of Civil Engineering at American University of Sharjah (AUS), has been awarded the 2024 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Region 10 Distinguished Service Medal. This prestigious award recognizes his contributions to the civil engineering profession, particularly his leadership and innovation on a global scale.
The ASCE Region 10 Distinguished Service Medal is one of the highest honors awarded by ASCE to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, service and dedication to advancing the civil engineering profession within Region 10, which encompasses ASCE’s international members outside the North America. This award recognizes those who have made significant contributions through research, professional practice and active participation in ASCE initiatives, thereby making a positive impact on the civil engineering community worldwide.
“Receiving the ASCE Region 10 Distinguished Service Medal is a profound distinction and privilege. It reflects not only my professional efforts but also the support and encouragement of my colleagues and the ASCE community. This recognition motivates me to continue striving for excellence in our field and contribute to advancing civil engineering on a global scale," said Dr. AlHamaydeh.
Dr. AlHamaydeh, is the first and youngest Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) fellow in the MENA region. He is an expert in Structural and Earthquake Engineering, known for his innovative research that enhances the resilience of structures against seismic events. His areas of expertise include nonlinear structural dynamic response analysis and modeling, passive control and supplemental damping devices, computer-aided design and simulation, nonlinear finite element methods, soil-structure interaction, as well as machine learning applications in structural and earthquake engineering. These research areas are crucial for developing structures that can withstand the severe impacts of earthquakes, ensuring greater safety and sustainability.
His extensive involvement in ASCE technical committees and subcommittees has been instrumental in shaping the future of seismic design and structural health monitoring. His work has not only advanced academic knowledge but also directly influenced the development of safer building practices globally.
"As a structural engineer, my goal has always been to make a meaningful impact through research, education and professional practice. This award is not just a personal achievement; it is a testament to the collective efforts of those who have supported me throughout my career. I am particularly grateful to Dr. Tarig Ali from the AUS Department of Civil Engineering for his nomination and unwavering encouragement," he said.
Dr. AlHamaydeh’s future plans include further engagement with ASCE activities and continuing his research to inspire and guide future engineers.
"I am passionate about fostering a culture of innovation and resilience within civil engineering. My work is far from over, and I look forward to contributing further to the growth and development of our profession," he said.
The AUS Department of Civil Engineering is recognized throughout the region for the exceptional education it offers through undergraduate and graduate programs. AUS is ranked number one in the UAE and among the top 200 universities globally for civil and structural engineering according to QS World University Rankings 2024.
