Awareness Day offers hands-on experience to students on a range of community aspects
University and high school students learned about important health, social, environmental and safety issues at the annual Awareness Day held recently at American University of Sharjah (AUS).
Organized by Community Service and Outreach in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), the event included presentations and displays by more than 20 private and governmental organizations. Students could also receive free health check-ups including dental, blood pressure, sugar levels and eyesight screenings. They could also donate blood and learn about volunteering opportunities.
Participating organizations included Beeah, the Child and Family Protection Center Administration, Dubai Blood Donation Center, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, Emirates Association of the Visually Impaired, Emirates Health Services, Emirates Red Crescent – Sharjah, Environment and Protected Areas Authority, Friends of Arthritis Patients, Friends of Breastfeeding, Friends of Kidney Patients, Ministry of Health and Prevention, Noor Dubai, Pink Caravan, RTA Dubai Traffic Safety Section - Traffic Department, Sharjah Center for Voluntary Work, Sharjah Police, Supreme Council of Family Affairs, Sharjah - Health Promotion, The Big Heart Foundation, and University of Sharjah - College of Dentistry.
Omer Elsiddig, a visual communication student and a student volunteer at the event, helped student visitors navigate the booths.
“It was really a great volunteering experience. In the process, I learned a lot about many community social and health issues as well as services available in the UAE. I learned about the opportunities available for people of determination, I donated blood, and interacted with the visitors and exhibitors. It was a rewarding experience. Such events are eye openers, and they connect students to real life,” said Elsiddig.
Rand Al Yahiya, an industrial engineering student and volunteer, liked the hands-on experiences students had at Awareness Day.
“It was an interesting event with each organization featuring their work specialty. I got to try things myself that I know I will never forget. For example, I learned how to do CPR and about the technologies available for the visually impaired and how they use them. It was really educational,” said Al Yahiya.
Beyond the classroom, AUS students enjoy a vibrant and dynamic campus life with access to a wide range of extracurricular activities, clubs, teams and associations, which are an essential part of AUS student life. AUS focuses on maintaining a healthy working and living environment for its community and continues to refine its on-campus facilities and services to meet their needs, leading to improved health, vitality and well-being.
