Student volunteers initiate “Taalam Arabic” sessions
As part of its role in serving the community and harmonizing student volunteers' academic and social environment at the university, Community Services launched a new student initiative entitled "Taalam Arabic." The initiative was proposed by student volunteers in March, 2016, as a platform that teaches non-Arabic speaking students the basic means of communication in Arabic which will help them better communicate and understand their peers in the university and outside.
The Taalam Arabic sessions are organized on a weekly basis as student volunteers gather in the Community Services office and teach one another in an informal class setting. The initiative has met with huge popularity and success which can be evidenced from the increasing rate of participation since the launch of the initiative.
Expressing his enthusiasm after attending the sessions, Karan Mohan Gurnani, a finance major said, "Learning Arabic words and getting to understand some of my peers is like exploring another aspect of the culture through its expressions."
"This is an ideal method of sharing the Arabic language with non-Arab students, especially when it is conducted by students. The sessions also serve as a platform for students from different nationalities to socialize and network with their peers and learn language and culture from one another. I encourage our students to take advantage of this opportunity to learn basic Arabic language which will be useful while they study and live in an Arabic speaking country such as the UAE," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students.
