Stargazing and Arts evening held at AUS
Community members of American University of Sharjah (AUS) gathered on the AUS campus on the evening of December 19, 2012 for an evening of astronomy and arts.
"First and foremost, this event is educational. Students are able to learn some planets, stars and constellations―what and why we see what we see. Many of the students here are from the Astronomy class, others are faculty and staff who want to learn in a fun environment," said Dr. Nidhal Guessoum, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Physics at AUS. "We hope that this kind of event becomes a regular feature at AUS," he added.
The Department of Physics, in collaboration with the AUS Students Astronomy Club and the Dubai Astronomy Group, hosted the Stargazing and Arts Evening. Along with planispheres, several small telescopes were used to observe the moon in its beautiful first quarter, as well as Mars and Jupiter, as well as other star formations. Additionally, several members of the AUS community performed poetry and music.
Astronomy-related events are regularly held at AUS. In June this year, members of the AUS community witnessed the transit of Venus over the face of the Sun, an event that happens only twice every century.
