AUS awards scholarships to outstanding athletic and active students
The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) awarded 29 outstanding students with partial scholarships for their involvement in extracurricular activities and athletic contributions at a special ceremony held recently in the Student Center.
Nineteen students received the AUS Active Student Scholarship, which provides scholarships to outstanding students who demonstrate excellence in extracurricular activities and whose efforts yield exceptional results and inspire other students to become high achievers. Ten students also received the AUS Athletic Scholarship, which is awarded to talented student-athletes who excel in sports, exhibit good sportsmanship and dedication, and establish a record of consistent participation. The athletic scholarship aims to encourage student participation, develop sports at the university and promote the role of athletics in an American model of higher education.
"Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, which is an important part of the well-rounded education we offer at AUS. Skills like teamwork, leadership, patience, discipline, learning from failure and sportsmanship are equally important when it comes to academics. We are proud of our students who received these scholarships, and we hope to see more recipients next year,” said Dr. Lisa Bardill Moscaritolo, Executive Director of Student Experience at AUS.
Layan Al Sourani, majoring in management and minoring in finance, was a recipient of the Active Student Scholarship. She is also a recipient of a merit scholarship from AUS for her academic achievements.
“I was very happy to receive the scholarship as it recognized the efforts I have put into my extracurricular work here at AUS. I have been a board member in more than seven student clubs during my time here, and I am now the President of the Student Council,” said Al Sourani.
She added: “It is extremely important for universities to offer scholarships for motivational and financial purposes. I am thankful that AUS offers its students an environment with incredible role models and inspirational individuals that keep us motivated and striving for greatness.”
Farah Ossama Hammam, a computer engineering student in her final year at AUS, was one of the recipients of the AUS Athletic Scholarship. She is the captain of the women’s swimming team at AUS and has competed in various competitions..
“Offering the AUS Athletic Scholarship is a great way for the university to show students who have great athletic abilities that they are appreciated for what they can do. When many students first enter university, they focus so much on their studies that they forget to enjoy the many extracurricular opportunities available to them. This scholarship helps motivate students to showcase their athletic abilities and also financially support them during their studies,” said Hammam.
Recipients of the AUS Active Student Scholarship were Anam Fatima, Bhavika Vohra, Jawwad Imran Sheikh, Jovita Mariam Cherian, Kareena Naresh Menghrajani, Kartavaya Bhargava, Mohammad Amaan Siddiqui, Mohammed Furqan Pasha, Muhammad Junaid, Rahma Zuhair, Rehab Khan, Sameera Nawaz Khan, Khaled Bashar Khawaja, Layan Al Sourani, Mohamed Sherif Said, Omar Abdeldayem, Samarth Rai, Utkarsh Chauhan and Yahya Mohmmed Noorul Islam.
Recipients of the AUS Athletic Scholarship were Ahmed Amr, Amira Boudrai, Farah Ossama Hammam, Jana Kayyal, Mohamad Sabah, Mohamed Jaafar, Rewa Hajjar, Vicky Naser, Ward Shaher Furany and Yara Ben Gdara.
AUS is committed to provide access to higher education. Through its extensive scholarship and need-based financial grant program, AUS ensures that student’s aspirations become reality.
